Department of Public Health Nursing

1. Introduction

  1. The Department of Public Health Nursing was established in 1953 to develop nursing manpower in the field of public health. The department is primarily concerned with the training of nurses at post-basic level to take up positions as administrators, supervisors, and nursing teachers. Intensive training on all aspects of public health nursing is imparted so as to ensure that nursing personnel function effectively as important member of health team. The department offers in-service education and training on different areas of Public Health to update knowledge and skill of in-service nursing personnel as part of development of quality nursing services.
  2. Since 1953, this department regularly conducted Certificate Course in Public Health Nursing (CPHN) for in-service nurses of different states of India and abroad.  To start with, it was a six months post-certificate course in Community Health Nursing.  In the year 1975 the name of the course was changed to Diploma in Public Health Nursing (DPHN) which was a ten months course. From 2004 onwards, after extensive revision of course curriculum it has been renamed as “Diploma in Nursing Education & Administration (Community Health)” i.e. DNEA (CH). It was meant for General Nurse-Midwives to take up positions as administrators, supervisors and teachers in the field of community health nursing. From the session 2013 -2014, the course is stopped according to Indian Nursing Council.
  3. The department has conducted short-term in-Service Training programme for different categories of Nurses on “Emergency Obstetrical Management in Community”, “Neonatal and Child Care in Community”,  “RCH”, “Nursing Administration”, “Educational Technology”, “Non Communicable diseases Nursing” etc.
  4. The department has also conducted WHO in-country fellowship training on “Community care for Chronically ill patients”

2. Teaching Activities

Short Courses / Training
  1. Conducted  4 weeks training programme for M.Sc. Nursing (Community Health) students of College of Nursing, Faridcoat, Punjab.
  2. Conducted 2 weeks training programme for M.Sc. Nursing (Community Health) students of NINE, PGI, Chandigarh.
  3. Conducted 4 weeks training programme for M.Sc. Nursing (Community Health) students of college of Nursing, Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata.
  4. Conducted 4 weeks training programme for M.Sc. Nursing (Community Health) students of college of Nursing, Burdwan Medical College & Hospital.

3.  Participation in Seminar/ Workshop/ Conference

1. HOD attended South-East Asia Regional Public Health conference & 57th All India annual Association of IPHA.

4. Other Activities

  1. In-Service Training programme for Public Health Nurses on “Non communicable diseases nursing” .
  2. Organised Baby show, demonstration of food preparation for healthy & easy available balance diet, demonstration of breast-feeding technique, proper hand washing technique in the community etc.
  3. Nursing Faculty acts as Member of INC inspection team to Inspect school of Nursing in different states.
