Public Health Nursing

Introduction

TheDepartment of Public Health Nursing was established in 1953 todevelop nursing manpower for India and other Asian and Africancountries for assuming the responsibilities of community healthnurses, nursing supervisors, specialist nurses, consultants(nursing), trainers (nursing) and administrators in a wide variety ofprofessional settings in the field of community health nursing. Thedepartment conducted a regular course, namely, Certificate of PublicHealth Nursing (CPHN) from 1953 to 1972. The course was reframed asDiploma in Public Health Nursing (DPHN) from 1972 and continued up to2004. In 2004-05, it was again reframed as Diploma in NursingEducation and Administration [DNEA (CH)] and continued up to2012-2013. Thereafter, the course has been discontinued forrealignment with the INC guidelines. Till date, the total number ofnursing personnel trained by the department, under the regularcourses, is 1434.

Besidesregular courses, short-term skill development training is alsoconducted on different current issues of public health importance forthe nursing personnel of different categories.

Teaching Activities:

  • Acted as teaching faculty for Sanitary Inspector skill training course students of the institute on Basic of emergency care and life support skills – theoretical classes and skill practice taken.

Other regular activities

  • Coordination of Nursing Field Training Programme of Other Institution at UHU&TC, Chetla and RHU&TC, Singur.

  • Validated Research Tools of a total of six (6) 1st year M.Sc. Nursing students of College of Nursing, NRS Medical College, College of Nursing, SSKM Hospital, B.M.Birla College of Nursing.

  • Field guide for DHPE students

  • Swachhata Initiative on Hand-washing Technique Demonstration to the canteen workers of A.I.I.H.&P.H.

  • Awareness programme on common cancer among women at Hoogly Womens’ College, Chinchura on 25th September 2019 along with Department of MCH

Achievements

  • Acted as resource Person in the National Nursing Conference on “Traverse Innovation: Ventures and Opportunities across Nursing Practice” on 28th & 29th June 2019.  And the Topic-“Public Health Entrepreneur: Training and Access to Primary care – Succeeding the Progeny towards Middle Level Health Provider” on 29.06.2019 at Savetha College of Nursing, Chennai

  • Conducted Skill Based First Responder Training on 28.11.2019 – Total 36

  • Organised Community based Rural & Urban practical Field Training Programme and guided M.Sc. Nursing students of different Government Colleges of Nursing from different states of India;
