Introduction
RURAL HEALTH & TRAINING CENTRE serves as a hub for training both medical and paramedical students, focusing on promoting and protecting community health. Rural Health Unit & Training Centre (RHU& TC), Singur, Hooghly, started as Maternity and Child Welfare Unit in 26th March, 1939. RHU&TC, Singur became a part of administrative control of AIIH& PH in 1944 – 45. This is the first Rural Health Unit & Training Centre in India which contributed to the “Bhore Committee Report”. This is one of the three field Pilot centres of Primary Health care in India. Rural Health Unit & Training Centre is located at a distance of 35 km. from Kolkata.

The Rural Health Unit and Training Centre at Singur apart from working as a Community Health training Centre and field laboratory for Medical and Paramedical Students, also gives comprehensive Primary healthcare to 64 villages having population of about 1,02,905 through two PHC and 16 units or sub-centres.

Objectives

Only 5 units out of 16 units have separate infrastructure. (4 buildings of SC, i.e. Nasibpur, Balidipa, Paltagarh and Nanda belong to RHU&TC, Singur & 1 SC building, i.e., Dewanvery belonged to West Bengal Govt.).

Teaching activities
Teaching goal for medical and paramedical is to make them a competent for promotive & preventive health services to the patient and community and also acquire knowledge and skills in identifying health needs, able to do resource mapping and manage community health by use of principles and techniques of epidemiology, health management.
Community exposure including development of skills of Community Diagnosis was provided to PG Students of the institute as per curricular activity of MD (CM), MPH (Epidemiology), M.Sc (Applied Nutrition), DPH, DHPE, MVPH, DPHM, DHS students of the Institute. In addition, Post Graduates, Undergraduates and Paramedical students from various institute in the country also participate in field training program in Public Health at RHU&TC Singur.
